Alexis D'Aloia and Kiara Woodward started this petition to US Congressional State Senators

The Equality Act (Bill #: H.R.5) is necessary as there are unequal rights and protections for LGBTQ+ people under federal law. The bill passed through the House of Representatives on February 25th, 2021 but has not yet been assigned a number in the Senate. When the bill was brought to the Senate in 2019, it was S.788. The sponsors of this bill are Senator Jeff Merkley (D) of Oregon and House Representative David Cicilline (D) of Rhode Island. The Act would explicitly prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. These federally recognized protections would make it illegal to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ+ community. Laws protecting the rights of the LGBTQ+ population exist in some states, however they do not exist in all states and therefore the Equality Act would provide these protections nationwide.
