“Juneteenth” June 19th. June 19, 1865 was the day the Emancipation Proclamation was read to newly freed African Americans in Texas by General Gordon Granger. This was the last state to have the proclamation announced following the Civil War. Now is the time for the US Congress to make June 19 an official, recognized, national holiday and day to recognize and commemorate  African American heritage and history.  I care because I’m an American who is fed up with racism and my country not reckoning with its past of enslaving Black people. Also because it’s time. America is fed up with racism.  Making Juneteenth a holiday would be a concrete action recognizing an important day in American history.
