Michael Young started this petition to US Congress

I am writing this petition on behalf of veterans and their families who are currently awaiting decisions on claims for disabilities incurred during military service and who have developed conditions since leaving service. Pre-existing conditions that weren't diagnosed or have not developed into a condition yet.

Recently congress approved a bill for 9/11 victims and their families. Part of that bill was to pay for victims that inherit conditions that were sustained during the recovery efforts of 9/11. This bill covers the next 10 years. So what congress is saying is that a 1st responder can file a claim years from now and not worry, because funding has already been set aside. But we are still fighting, some of us for claims filed 10, 15, and even 20 years for some of us. Now while we as veterans sympathize with the victims of 9/11 and the 1st responders, we are also 1st responders. We can no longer sit buy and allow the veterans administration to decide our fate in the manner in which they do. Changes have to come and they have to come swiftly. Changes like the ones listed further in this petition. Changes like a veteran shouldn't have to be rated at 100% to receive dental care.

I like many other veterans have developed conditions since leaving the military. Conditions such as cancer, diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and a host of other life threatening ailments. Some veterans such as myself were assigned to nuclear ships, which were dry docked on areas containing asbestos.

I am asking any veteran who has developed any of these conditions, and then some after leaving the military to please sign this petition. Remember the physical at ATHEES? We had none of these conditions going into the military. I know I didn't. None of these conditions happened until we were exposed to certain conditions while in the military. Conditions that don't register until long after you leave the military. Conditions that the VA claims is not service connected.

I am also petitioning on behalf of our families. Our families go through this battle with the VA right along with us. But if we pass away, the claim goes away as well. I am petitioning that if a claim is filed and a claim is granted, and that a veteran dies before that veteran is payed, his spouse, daughter, son, someone in the immediate family should be able to receive that granted claim.

I am petitioning how the VA processes claims. A veteran such as myself should not have to wait on remanded conditions to be settled before the granted items are rated for and payed for. Furthermore the VA MUST find a way to speed up settling of claims, including appeals which are the biggest reason for claims being slow. When a veteran files a claim for hardship, it should be handled within 30 days.

Finally. A veteran who calls in should be able to speak to someone beyond customer service who can give them the answers to the questions that they are seeking other than some scripted response.

Veterans for to long have been fighting the beuracrats to get the simplest of items and answers. So I ask all veterans to join with me in this petition to effect change. Now.
