Joseph Eatman started this petition to US Congress

As a country we celebrate a day honoring a man who came into a land  and brought sickness and disease to the indigenous peoples and murdered and maimed innocent people for no other reason then simply to do so. Yet in the United States we honor this man by claiming he was the first to discover our country when in fact he did not even land in North America, his fleet sailed through the Canary Islands, the Bahamas and their first land sighting and landing point was San Salvador island. In an age of higher learning and discovery we still celebrate and honor this harbinger of death knowing he wasn’t the first to discover America and in fact we take days off work to give credit to his “discovery”. We willingly and falsely teach our children this lie in our schools and use catchy jingles to instill fictitious information and erroneous data that simply did not happen and events that did not occur. We are fast to act in the name of social justice or for the rights of others but we won’t stand up and demand that our schools stop misleading our children with inaccurate information. It’s sad that we allow swaded and one sided political agendas to infiltrate and influence or school curriculums but when we know information isn’t correct and still allow it to be taught that is a different matter all together. In the year 1001 Leif Eríkson sailed from Greenland to North America becoming the first person to sail and document his travels to the new world. Going as far as constructing maps of this new found land and writing down his experiences and interactions with the indigenous peoples. It is my intention to abolish columbus day and officially recognized Leif Eríkson Day as the new federal holiday in its place. To recognize and honor Scandinavian heritage and a man who actually discovered our country and without murdering the indigenous peoples of the land. Let us be educated and informed and take a stand to observe this great man and his great discovery.
