Urge Your Representatives: Save Food Aid
Food assistance for some of the world’s most vulnerable people is on the congressional chopping block in Washington.
Right now, the House of Representatives is debating how much money will be spent on life-saving food assistance programs in the coming year.
The bill – called the Agriculture Appropriations Bill – could cut international food assistance by more than 20% from last year.
In 2011, the United States government provided vital food assistance to more than 53 million men, women and children in 82 countries.
But if the bill passes, 7.7 million hungry people won’t get critical food assistance in places like Syria, Mali, and Somalia.
Tell your Representative: support President Obama’s $1.5 billion budget for lifesaving food aid programs, along with reforms to help improve the efficiency of food delivery!
In a world in which nearly 870 million people - one in every eight - grapple with the challenge of hunger on a daily basis, and millions more will be caught in emergency need because of drought or conflicts in places like Syria, it is imperative that we maintain strong funding for Food for Peace and do what we can to stretch that funding further.
As a constituent who cares about ending global hunger, I ask that you support critical Food for Peace programs and appropriate no less than $1.5 billion in the FY 2014 Agriculture Appropriations bill. At the same time, I urge you to work with the Administration to find efficiencies and reforms that would enable those dollars to reach more of the world's hungry people.
Supporting Food for Peace programs saves millions of lives and continues long-standing U.S. political and moral leadership efforts to combat global hunger. Thank you in advance for your support in funding these important lifesaving activities, and your consideration of improving their flexibility.
