Take Action: Support the FLAME Act
For years the Forest Service has transferred money out of vital agency programs and services in order to fund the increasing cost of fighting catastrophic wildfires. H.R. 1404, the Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement (FLAME) Act would help address this problem by creating a separate fund for suppressing large-scale wildfires. The FLAME Act also requires agencies to provide a report to Congress containing a cohesive wildland fire management strategy and science-based budget predictions.

Please contact your member of Congress and urge him or her to vote "YES" on the FLAME Act.

Please Vote YES on the FLAME Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

Please vote YES on, H.R. 1404, the Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement (FLAME) Act. This bill would provide much-needed relief for the federal agencies responsible for managing wildfires. I know that the Forest Service and other land management agencies are forced almost every year to take money away from a variety of important programs and services so that it can fund wildfire suppression.

The goal of the FLAME Act is to ensure that suppressing costly fires do not continue to bankrupt the Forest Service and Department of Interior land management agencies. To achieve the goal of the FLAME Act, it is imperative that Congress establish a stand-alone account to cover the costs of those exceptional events.

The bill also requires the Secretaries submit to Congress 1) a review of wildland fire incidents, 2) a report to Congress containing a cohesive wildland fire management strategy, and 3) science-based budget predictions and annual reports on the use of the fund. FLAME also authorizes a grant program to encourage communities to reduce fire risks.

The FLAME Act passed unanimously in the House last year. Your support is imperative this year. This bill would be a critical first step toward addressing the growing financial crisis of suppressing wildfires and managing America's public lands.
