The American Heart Association and our coalition partners are working to pass House Bill 1485, legislation that would provide a truly comprehensive clean indoor air law in Pennsylvania and eliminate the dozens of exemptions that currently exist that result in thousands of workers exposed to the dangers of secondhand smoke when they go to work each day. House Bill 1485 would protect ALL workers and the public from secondhand smoke exposure and provide a level playing field for businesses by making all businesses smoke-free—NO exemptions. Urge your House Member to support House Bill 1485 and improve the health of countless Pennsylvanians.
The fact remains that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S. It not only claims the lives of those who choose to use tobacco, but also those who are unwillingly exposed to secondhand smoke. Unfortunately, the Clean Indoor Air Act of 2008 is not comprehensive and only removes secondhand smoke in some workplaces and public areas in the Commonwealth. We now have an opportunity to enact a law that would protect all workers and the public from secondhand smoke exposure and provide a level playing field for businesses.
I urge you to support House Bill 1485 and, upon returning from Recess in the Fall, to please contact Representative DiGirolamo, Chairman of the House Human Services Committee and ask that House Bill 1485 be scheduled for a vote in Committee. By supporting this bill, you have the ability to significantly impact the lives, and improve the overall health, of countless Pennsylvanians. I thank you in advance for your consideration of this request.
