Urge Utah Govt. to Consider Public Transportation Developments over Expansion of i-15
Why this petition matters
In light of the recently announced expansion of Interstate 15, along with other highway developments in the state, we are urging state legislators and officials to instead consider investing in improving Utah’s public transit system.
The proposed Rio Grande Plan (linked below) would be more beneficial to Utah in the long-term than widening the freeway. There have been additional proposals, such as electrifying and expanding the Frontrunner line, adding Trax lines, and continuing to double-track existing lines, all of which have public support and long-term benefits.
Added lanes on existing freeways are band aid solutions for a congestion problem that will continue to worsen. Additional lanes do nothing to combat the number of cars commuting per household, or the health risks associated with having so many cars on our freeways. Also, unlike public transportation, additional lanes do not benefit low-income individuals who do not own and cannot afford personal vehicles. All people deserve access to green transportation and clean air, and we deserve a government that advocates for these needs. Recent developments in Utah’s public transit system are not enough, especially compared to developments occurring in other urban areas across the country. In the face of global climate change, it is important that local leadership takes initiative to keep greenhouse gas emissions as low as possible.
Please sign and share if you would rather Utah invest this freeway expansion money in green public transportation!
