The Issue

The Town of Parry Sound's involvement in sponsoring the Witches Walk event through the Downtown Business Association (DBA) raises serious concerns regarding adherence to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Municipalities and their affiliated agencies are mandated to remain neutral on religious matters, ensuring that no one feel excluded or marginalized based on religious beliefs or affiliations. Parry Sound's sponsorship infringes upon this duty, thus challenging the principles of neutrality and inclusivity enshrined within national law.

It is important to acknowledge that witchcraft is not merely a fictional or cultural image, but rather an established spiritual identity practiced by adherents of Wicca and other pagan traditions. These communities recognize witchcraft as a legitimate religious expression. By adopting and promoting the “Witches Walk,” the Town and DBA are, in effect, endorsing imagery and symbolism that belong to a recognized faith tradition.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms asserts unequivocally that freedom of religion and conscience must not be impeded by government actions. Sponsoring an event that potentially aligns with certain religious overtones stands contrary to these core principles, potentially alienating individuals who may not share these beliefs. By providing official support to the Witches Walk, the Town of Parry Sound risks compromising its position of neutrality, which can lead to division and mistrust within the community.

We propose that the Town of Parry Sound uphold its commitment to equality and freedom by withdrawing its sponsorship from the Witches Walk. Such a move will reinforce the town's dedication to maintaining a space that welcomes all, irrespective of religious beliefs or practices. By doing so, Parry Sound will not only comply with the stipulations laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but it will also cultivate a more respectful and inclusive community atmosphere for its residents.

We call upon our fellow citizens, residents of Parry Sound, and beyond, to support this initiative. Join us in urging local government officials to take the appropriate actions necessary to ensure that our municipality honours its obligation to neutral governance. Sign this petition to advocate for the removal of municipal sponsorship of the Witches Walk and promote the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and religious neutrality in our community.
