Urge Ohio Newspaper Chain to Publish Gay Wedding Announcements

The Issue

When a same-sex couple tried to have their wedding announcement printed in their hometown Cambridge, Ohio newspaper, they were told by staff members of the Daily Jeffersonian to hit the road. Turns out the Daily Jeffersonian is owned by Dix Communications, a family-owned chain of newspapers in Ohio that runs at least six daily newspapers, as well as several radio stations.

The owner of the company, Andrew Dix, told reporters that his company is allowed to determine what's appropriate for publication, and in their eyes, weddings between same-sex couples are offensive to readers.

Really? Celebrating the legal commitment of two people, regardless of their gender, can be offensive? Dix told reporters, "We have the right to edit and accept material as we see fit."

We also have the right to let the newspaper and the folks at Dix Communications know that same-sex marriages aren't anything to censor from your readers. Thousands of readers have family members who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Refusing to print wedding announcements from these folks is not only discriminatory, but a disservice to readers.

Urge Dix Communications and the Daily Jeffersonian to print wedding announcements for same-sex couples. One of the newspapers owned by the company -- The Alliance Review -- has already agreed to publish same-sex wedding announcements. There's no reason why other newspapers in the chain can't follow suit.
