Why this petition matters

Started by Nya Newman

Treyvon (17) and Donta (16) Newman were both convicted in 2013 of a botched armed robbery. Judge Vincent Del Giudice presented biased judgment towards them throughout the trial, stating that he did not want them to have a chance at rehabilitation. The court lacked evidentiary support and badgered an underage, pregnant witness into false and exaggerated testimony to support their conviction. The boys moved back and forth between NYS, where mom lived, and NC, where dad lived. There was a huge mental and financial disparity between the two placements that wasn’t taken into consideration. Since being incarcerated, they have endured physical altercations initiated by CO’s, they have had property thrown out, they have been denied basic human rights including but not limited to owning a pair of socks. Our family has been harassed upon visitations and Donta was even denied the right to keep his locs. This isn’t even half! In February, prisons in NYC admitted to  inmates not receiving proper health care and treatment. Clinton Correctional is being investigated for their mistreatment of and part in inmate down-spiraling. They’ve spent almost 10 years in prison. Treyvon has been told by a court justice that his rehabilitation is evident. Donta has been told the same by his counselor! Treyvon has taken barber classes to continue his education. Donta has taken continuing education classes as well as anger management. Their mental health is now at stake, and I fear that with having 8 years left, that might be all that’s at stake. Donta has been hospitalized but all contact has been severed by MidState Correctional. We don’t condone the actions taken, we don’t excuse their behavior, but we ask for grace. We ask that you sign this so we can bring awareness to what’s going on! We plead for their lives. For them to have the opportunity to prove their rehabilitation and their growth. For them to be able to hug their families and Treyvon, be with his daughter. For their hope to be restored before it’s too late. For our family to be restored. By signing this petition, you will be helping us restore faith. Our goal is for this to reach the eyes of the media, ears of  the news, and the minds and hearts of the appellate committee who has the power to overturn the initial conviction, to reduce their sentencing, and more! We thank you in advance for all support, any donations, and just the fact that some of you took time out to read this.
