Urge Israel to Cease Military Actions and Lift the Blockade on Gaza Strip
The Issue
As individuals who deeply value human rights and international law, we are all profoundly affected by the ongoing conflict between the state of Israel and Palestinians. We believe that a humane solution can only be achieved through mutual recognition of pain, suffering, and the need for change. The status quo cannot continue; there is an undeniable asymmetry in terms of losses, the extent of suffering, and the dehumanization endured by the Palestinian population over the last 75 years. The state of Israel is designated by UN Law as an occupying force and has established an impossible apartheid system that has been bearing its bitter and ugly fruits, regardless of our dislike or denial of it. We regret but are not totally surprised by the extent of hatred and violence, which will only continue in a downward spiral unless intervened.
We call upon Israel to cease all military incursions into Gaza immediately. These actions not only violate international laws but also exacerbate an already dire humanitarian situation. The total blockade on Gaza Strip has already led to severe shortages in power supply, water availability, and access to food, pushing this region towards a humanitarian disaster of epic proportions.
The impending Israeli response to last week's tragic and horrific losses should not lead to the demise and collective punishment of the civilian population of Gaza with 2.5 million residents, who have already endured unbearable conditions for the last 16 years. Half of Gaza's population is children under 18 years old (source: UNICEF). We strongly warn against any war crimes that may be committed against the vulnerable civilians of Gaza.
In light of these facts, we urge everyone who values human rights to join us in calling on Israel to stop all military incursions into Gaza immediately; lift the total blockade on this region; restore supplies of power, water, and food; prevent further humanitarian disaster; respect international law and protect civilians from potential war crimes.
