Urge Industry to Protect Blue Whales and Blue Skies
Research shows that an estimated 80 endangered whales are hit and killed by ship strikes each year off of the coast of California.
Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Program along the coast of California which incentivizes companies to incorporate sustainable shipping practices across their global supply chain. By creating seasonal and predictable slow speed zones, this program helps companies protect endangered whales, reduce fuel use and regional greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality and human health outcomes. The Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies team independently verifies cooperation rates, quantifies the benefits of participation, and provides recognition of program participants to encourage the adoption of sustainable shipping practices across the globe.
The Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program is urging the shipping industry and major retailers and corporate brands to prioritize whale-safer shipping operations, like reduced speeds in designated slow speed zones off of the California coast.
