Urge Congress: Commit to ending Pediatric AIDS this Mother's Day

Pediatric AIDS can be eliminated in this generation if Congressional leaders reaffirm the dedication of Americans to this critical issue.

1,000 children around the world contract HIV every single day, yet the leading cause of transmission is 100% preventable. Mother-to-child transmission can be stopped with a treatment program that can keep newborns infection-free and their mothers healthy.

Over the past 30 years, we have gone from limited knowledge of the existence of pediatric AIDS to unprecedented action toward eliminating the disease. In the U.S., we have reduced the number of children born HIV-positive to less than 200 children per year. From a global perspective, in 2005, only 14 percent of women were receiving prevention-of-mother-to child-transmission (PMTCT) services, and that number is now nearly 50 percent.

Congress needs to make PMTCT services a priority, and reaffirm the United States’ commitment to fighting pediatric AIDS.

The United States has led the world in the fight to eliminate HIV, and organizations like the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS foundation have made ending pediatric AIDS their mission. Together, all of us can fight back against pediatric AIDS and stop the transmission of HIV to children.

Congress’ voice can bring the issue of pediatric AIDS to the forefront.

That’s why we need Congress to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to ending pediatric AIDS by supporting an official resolution recognizing the potential to eliminate pediatric HIV and AIDS and keeping HIV positive mothers alive.
