Petitioning Chiang Mai Zoo director Mr. Thanapat Pongpamorn

Urge Chiang Mai Zoo to scrap plans to exhibit Polar bears and Penguins for entertainment in Thailand

You look out upon the majestic ice flows around you, the icy waves lapping at your feet. The snow glistening as the sun shines down from a crystal blue sky helping evaporate the few ocean droplets that are rolling down your body from your swim.

Your belly full with the fish you have just caught from the ocean, taught how to by your mother when you were a small cub. You look around then close your eyes and lift your nose and smell the fresh clean crisp breeze that gently ruffles your beautiful white coat. You are content, you are free in the Antarctic, the beautiful icy sanctuary that you know as home.

Your eyes quickly open, smell something...someone that you do not recognise. The feeling of contentment is rapidly replaced by fear. What is that scent, where is it coming from. You hear footsteps and voices from behind you, you turn to face these intruders, these strangers that have trespassed into your home. You realise the intruders are humans and they are running straight at you, pointing long sharp metal objects and nets. What have you done wrong, why are they attacking you? What should you do, run? Fight? Dive into the water beside you?.....Bang..bang..bang...Its too late. You hear three loud noises and then a sharp pain in your side, your neck your belly. They have shot you...For you it is over, you never stood a chance. These humans, these strangers, these creatures have shot you with bullets full of chemicals..

Your body feels so heavy, your head is spinning,so disorientated, you cant run as your limbs give in under your weight ,then you lay still on the ice. Terrified, unable to move, unable to defend yourself. A magnificent and majestic animal brought to his knees by a human. They throw the net over you and start to drag you across the ice like you are worthless rubbish, as your eyes start to become heavy you glance through the net, your last look at the place you loved, the place you had only ever known ,the place where you were free, the last glance you will ever take of the place that you knew as home. You are now the property of Chiang Mai Zoo.

You may have already heard of this zoo in Northern Thailand, the place where animal abuse has been witnessed, where elephants are forced to paint with brushes onto canvasses to entertain the public. Taught how to by beating the elephants with sticks and poles until they get it right. They get the same abusive treatment if the animal paints something with the wrong colour than the keeper wants. All this to please the crowds, to bring in the money, to entertain idiot humans who throw things at the animals and laugh at the zoos prisoners in their steel and concrete prisons, that just like the polar bear above have been taken from their natural environment and imprisoned for human entertainment. All this of course is labeld under education and research...Well we all know about the Chinese and there research (Just think of the animals they are known to eat and how they are killed!)

Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand is planning open a new exhibition with Polar bears and penguins. They have already started to build a new structure for this. They planned to finish the building by 2013, but after the protest last weekend, the ministry of natural resource and environment will have another board meeting to reconsider this topic this week.

This is our chance, for the international community to speak for the voiceless, to demand that under no circumstances should these exhibits go ahead. These are Antarctic animals and like all species have a right to freedom,to live in there own natural environment, not in a concrete prison in a tropical country.

The zoos argument is that the animals are already held in another zoo and the exhibits will be cooled by generators! The basic facts are that these animals at some point were caught in the wild, drugged, beaten and kept in constant fear and held as prisoners for money! Either way, this zoo wants to incarcerate yet more animals for the paying public’s entertainment, but they want to increase global warming as well!

Dear Mr Pongpamorn

Reference: Proposed Polar Bear and Penguin Exhibit

Please note that I have chosen to use this generic letter to contact you as it fully echoes my belief and opinion on this subject, and as such I trust you will treat this correspondence as though it was in my own words.

It has come to my notice that your zoo is proposing to exhibit Polar Bears and Penguins. I also understand the exhibits have only started to be be built and you are currently reviewing the situation.

I strongly urge you to discontinue the building and plans to exhibit the above mentioned animals for the following reasons.

  • All animals regardless of where they sourced from, originated and should remain in their natural habitat and environment, in this case in the wild.

  • That the impact that the generators to rightfully keep these animals in a cool environment will have a devastating impact on global warming.

  • That the costs on both the animals and environment far outweigh any benefits that could be gained from the proposed plans.

Chiang Mai Zoo reputation is built upon an understanding of environment and species. If you go ahead with your proposed plans this will surely be in contradiction to your organisations ethics?

Please reconsider and abandon all plans to exhibit these animals and focus your resources on more important matters such as conservation and implementing better animal welfare standards and practices in Thailand.

Respectfully yours
