Why this petition matters

Started by Annie Ellis

I would like to update/renovate the volleyball courts at Idlewild Park in Reno, NV. They are currently sand courts, but the sand is hardened and has weeds growing throughout due to not being maintained over the years. Sand volleyball courts, when not in a natural location (i.e. beach or lake) have to be consistently kept up with raking and changing the sand so that it does not become overgrown and compacted. Compacted sand can be harmful to anyone playing on it because the roughness can cause scraping and bleeding and can feel like concrete when diving into the sand. These are NOT the conditions in which the sport should be played.

I would like to put down sod where these courts are and use the area exclusively for grass volleyball, as it is already zoned for volleyball, and the upkeep would be much simpler.

The sport of volleyball is quickly growing in popularity across the country because of the different avenues there are to participate in it i.e. indoor, beach, and grass. I would like to host grass volleyball tournaments (and eventually branch out into leagues and youth camps) in Reno in order to help grow the sport in the Northern Nevada region.
