UNLV Should Educate and Promote Minimum Standards of Physical Activity

First year college students are know for the "Freshmen 15." A study from WebMD shows," that nearly one in four freshmen gain at least 5% of their body weight, an average of about 10 pounds, during their first semester." This is a result of students eating economical, fast, junk food as they are away from home. Students spend a lot of time snacking while studying causing the students to gain weight and be less physically active. These poor habits will likely cause health problems such as obesity, heart attacks, high cholesterol and more.

The American Heart Association suggests, "at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activities). For people who would benefit from lowering their blood pressure or cholesterol, we recommend 40 minutes of aerobic exercise of moderate to vigorous intensity three to four times a week to lower the risk for heart attack and stroke."

In order to address this problem the UNLV Student Wellness Center should educate and promote the minimum standards on physical activity. The Student Wellness Center doesn't tell the students how much they should be exercising, or what exercises to do, unless the student pays for a personal trainer. They have certain programs and facilities, but they do not have an outreach program to give all students the guidance on the basic needs for physical health.

Here is a great example of what UNLV should do! At Drexel University they have a beginner's workout program listed on their website. UNLV should post something like this on their website and promote it, so that students know how much they should be exercising and what type of exercises they should be doing.
