Sussex must enforce a ‘zero tolerance’ policy when dealing with sexual assault
Since being at the university I, and many other young women have become increasingly aware that the prevalence of sexual assault on and off campus is disturbingly high. This is not just because of certain sexual predators and rapists walking around campus, but because the university fails to address this as a real issue and enables the behaviour to occur by turning a blind eye. Multiple incidents have occurred and been reported (with explicit, damning evidence shown), particular between 2018 to the present, however the university has failed time and time again to follow through with the investigation process and deal with such matters appropriately. For example, last year it was discovered that their system used for reporting incidents of sexual assault and harassment didn’t even work properly so even when people were brave enough to come forward, the response was silence. Secondly, punishing the abuser by giving them a ‘consent course’ that they can opt out of is not exactly a productive way of tackling the issue, it’s a plaster on an extremely deep wound. This has been going on for far too long, and finally people are being brave enough to speak up. Sussex university must do better and have let all of us down by not ensuring campus is a safe space for everyone. They must not let down another generation of students and must begin implementing a more effective, thorough system that prioritises and protects the safety and well being of students. No one should ever have to argue, debate or fight for their right to not be assaulted/abused/harassed. Sussex uni you should be ashamed.
