In 2017, the University of Texas removed four statues from display on campus. These monuments were memorials to the confederacy and symbols of white supremacy and neo-nazism on campus. Three of the statues were donated to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History. However, since then, UT has quietly reinstalled the memorial to Texan governor James Hogg outside of Main Building. 

James Hogg signed the first Jim Crow laws into effect during his tenure as Texas governor. These deeply racist laws ushered in an era of segregation, racist policies and hate crimes. He is a symbol of institutional white supremacy and his statue has no place on UT's campus.
