An alumni from my university attended this program and had absolute admiration for the program’s impact on her life and others. The MFA program is so important to not only the university, but as a hub for artistic excellence and development in Laramie.

As someone who grew up in Laramie and who graduated with an undergraduate degree in English from UW, the potential elimination of the creative writing MFA would be a significant personal, local, and national loss. Learning form MFA students in workshops, the Writing Center, and the Owen Wister Review have allowed me to pursue my own path as a writer, as well as experience literary writing as accessible. Like others have mentioned, as UW seeks to diversify its population and attract diverse businesses to the state, the arts and the well-recognized MFA are crucial to continue to support.

I am signing because superb writing, not just competent writing, is essential in any and every discipline. The MFA in Creative Writing hones that skill.

I took all of the Creative Writing courses available on the side of my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. I served on Student Publications and as the editor of the Owen Wister Review. The CW faculty and coursework improved my skills as a writer and provided me with a pathway towards a professional career in writing as a scientist/academic.

Many UW graduates remain unwilling to write comments or opinions about significant issues because of their inability to express themselves with clarity and reason. Duane Keown, Professor Emeritus, UW
