Paid Leave for UWM Student Employees

The student body was sent an email on March 11th, 2020 from Chancellor Mark Mone stating, "First, I want to reinforce that the health and well-being of our campus communities are paramount". However, as of March 12th, 2020, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee "non-essential" student employees were informed that they would be unable to work until, at the potential earliest, April 11th, 2020. We were given no paid leave and no offer of adequate benefits or resources to get us through the next month being essentially unemployed, leaving student employees financially compromised. This move by the University has left many departments and student employees at risk; BOSS Drivers, University Housing employees, Food Service employees, Tour Guides, etc have all been suspended from work without pay, where many of us rely on these jobs to pay rent, buy groceries, pay bills, survive. This has not only affected the main UWM campus, but the branch campuses as well (Washington County, Waukesha). We demand that the University give student employees paid leave in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students.
