Presently, in Kirkland, Washington - a mere 20 minutes away from the University of Washington Campus- Coronavirus has affected its community members in the following ways:

  • more than 50 residents of LifeCare Center of Kirkland are showing symptoms and are awaiting testing
  • over two dozen firefighters, and some police officers, are under quarantine following expose to the virus
  • two deaths have been reported as of March 1st

Kirkland, being a part of the greater Seattle area has numerous commuters coming to the University of Washington, both students and staff, with unknown exposure to the virus.

We write this Petition in order to encourage the prevention of a "community spread" of COVID-19, due to it being such a new strain of disease bearing many unknowns, and ensuring the safety of students and staff members of the University of Washington. While we acknowledge that there have been no positively tested cases within 5 miles of the campus itself, we want to strongly encourage that adequate prevention methods should be taken PRIOR to there actually being an outbreak on the campus itself, in order to be able to contain the virus and minimize it's negative impact on our community and education.

Most importantly, directly quoting the CDC "Until a vaccine is developed, community-based interventions such as school dismissals, event cancellations, social distancing, and creating employee plans to work remotely can help slow the spread of COVID-19."

We hope that the University of Washington is able to recognize the advantages of shutting down campus operations as precautionary measures to minimize the risk of a campus-wide epidemic of Coronavirus that has the potential of great negative consequences to the student body and staff.
