As a current student who has to walk by this statue everyday to class, I am constantly reminded of the racist settler colonialism mindset that founded this school and enslaved my ancestors and still keeps so many of our academic freedoms constrained. It’s time UW moved on from this part of their history and removed the statue.

We should not honor a man who held slaves while also fighting for the idea that all men are created equal. As an MLIS alum I urge UW to take down this racist statue.
