Madison K started this petition to University of Washington

UW announced on April 1 that the graduation ceremony in June will be completely virtual. T-Mobile Stadium is allowed to host 9,000 fans in its arena this spring to watch baseball games, and yet UW is stating that it’s “not safe” to have even a few hundred in Husky Stadium, a stadium with a 70,000 person capacity. Having small departmental ceremonies would ensure that social distancing is possible, especially if all are vaccinated. Other universities all over the country, including Boston University, have announced an in-person graduation, yet UW is refusing to do so even though it is entirely possible to do it safely. President Biden is set to announce that all US citizens will be eligible for vaccinations by April 19, but UW stated in its email that there is “not enough time” for students to get vaccinated by June 12. Two months is ample time for all students who plan on attending to get vaccinated, as well as their family members. UW has no excuse not to have departmental ceremonies. It seems like they took the easy way out by cancelling the entire thing instead of putting in the work to celebrate its students in person like they deserve. Please sign this to help convince UW to do the right thing and host in-person ceremonies.
