Dear Prof. Stuart Croft,

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick

A university, from Latin universitas, literally means a ‘whole’, symbolising a community. In this world, it symbolises a specific community, a community of teachers and scholars. A community where knowledge prevails over all differences. We firmly believe that this ought to be true, especially during such unprecedented times that we are currently experiencing. However, it is with great sorrow that we were faced with the University’s decision not to consent for a safety-net policy to postgraduate students although it has been granted for undergraduates. We, postgraduate students representing all schools of the University of Warwick, feel strongly about this unequal treatment, which undoubtedly undermines our sense of belonging in the community of the university on fair and unbiased terms.

Nevertheless, we have been struck to a greater extent by the fact that the University does not intend to offer any reduction in fees for postgraduate students, supporting this decision with the fact of ongoing classes that would take place in Term 3. While we genuinely acknowledge the effort that you have sustained to invest in order to continue delivering your education, we find it reasonable to reduce the fees for Term 3 by at least 50% for postgraduate students. The tuition fees cover the costs of upkeep and functioning of academic buildings and facilities such as the library, of which none are currently available for students and will continue to be closed for the rest of Term 3. Moreover, online courses not only tend to be cheaper, they also undoubtedly diminish student experience and in-class interaction, which are inseparable parts of the degrees into which we decided to invest significantly.

Therefore, we would kindly like to request a partial reduction of tuition fees for Term 3 due to the current extraordinary circumstances, motivating this petition with the factor that advertised promises of how our programmes would be delivered will not be fulfilled by the University.

We hope that our plead will be treated with your understanding and compassion of our situation in these tough times.
