'Parking Update

UWTSD is proud of our commitment to sustainability. As part of this we are introducing a series of actions to reduce car usage on our campuses. These will include a new not-for-profit parking management system which aims to increase low carbon travel choices including walking, cycling or car sharing.

The new permit system, which will be managed by a third party, will be introduced from the 1st October 2017 and you’ll be able to purchase permits at your SU Freshers’ Fair or online in the future.

Student permits cost £160 for the year for non-residential students. A limited number of residential student permits are available at a cost of £200. Payment by instalment will be possible. Any surpluses will be re-invested in sustainable transport initiatives across the University.

Our campuses have good public transport links. You can find the routes to our campuses using Traveline Cymru’s uni journey planner or by looking at our green travel pages.

The new permit system will ensure that we are able to provide a safe, accessible and sustainable campus environment for our staff, students and visitors. The new system will also ensure consistency of approach to travel management across our campuses.'

This penalises Lampeter students especially due a high number of mature and distance students who travel into the town each day. Due to its remote location there is limited transport (only a bus service, no trains) at times nesscesary (not practical for 9am lectures and do not run after 7pm).

As many are aware students have a thin budget and charging a large portion of money per year is not going to create ideal situations. Those who have cars do so because of the distances they travel between university and home. This permit will also mean that those who use the campus parking (of which there is a reasonable amount) regularly (including library days) will be hit in the pocket, potentially putting people into more debt than is necessary.

A discussion about this is necessary. If a permit was to happen an action to make it cheaper would be preferred. Why are students being treated like cash cows when universities already know they struggle.
