Revoke Richard Spencer's UVA Degree

Dear President Sullivan and University of Virginia Board of Visitors,

On Saturday May 13th, 2017, Richard Spencer (University of Virginia, BA, Class of 2001) lead a torch-wielding display of bigotry in Charlottesville, Virginia. Spencer, father of the term, "alt right," invoked KKK imagery and espoused white supremacist rhetoric in reverence for Robert E. Lee's statue, a symbol of Virginia's dark history of racism and oppression.

Just 1.5 miles from the Rotunda, Spencer, who supports, "peaceful ethnic cleansing," declared, “What brings us together is that we are white, we are a people, we will not be replaced.” The crowd echoed, "You will not replace us."

Let us send Spencer our own message: "What brings the University of Virginia community together is that we are of diverse backgrounds, we are a people who stand against injustice, and we have a spirit that will not be replaced."

By making students feel unsafe in a town that they call home, Spencer's hatred threatens the community of trust on which UVA is founded.

As students and as neighbors, we feel it is important that UVA shows Spencer and the country that this hatred is not welcome here -- that we will stand by students of color and by every other community member whose identity is threatened by these acts of hate and ignorance.

We implore you to revoke Richard Spencer's University of Virginia degree. UVA should not continue to affiliate with a man undeserving of wearing the honor of Honors.

As of Monday, May 15th 7:00 AM, UVA has yet to release a statement or send an email about the event.
