Forrest Cuch started this petition to Unversity of Utah Administration

There is something more destructive to native student's psyches and mental health than nicknames and symbols. What is truly hurtful is when native people of the state feel ignored and invisible in a state named after them. Rather than discontinue these symbols which would contribute to further ignorance and misinformation, the University should embrace this opportunity to educate the community about the true essence of the native cultures of Utah.

Some native students and faculty, not of the Ute Nation, are not aware of their disrespect for the sovereign rights of the Ute Indian Tribe when they knowingly oppose and speak out against the tribe's position. These students and faculty should be honoring the position of the tribe that inhabited this part of the state and region of the country. To disrespect the Ute Tribe's sovereignty is even more offensive and disdainful than non-Indians unconsciously offending by displaying war paint and feathers at U of U sporting events.

This petition proposes that the University of Utah honor the Ute Indian Tribe's position and establish a program that will effectively bring the Indian and non-Indian cultures together and educate people on how to honor and respect not only the Ute but all Indigenous peoples of the state of Utah.
