Restructuring of the Calculus 1 course at University of The West Indies, Mona Campus

The course Math 1142 (Calculus 1) offered at the University of the West Indies,has seen a high failure rate in recent years which has affected students in an adverse manner. It is of the belief that the structure of the course and the delivery of the material is not designed in a manner where students can understand key concepts properly. The mode of delivery and assessment methods  being used currently are not in line with enabling students to excel in the course. The same course is administered at the Cavehill  campus and the methods of assessing the concepts are far different. The material covered in tutorials and what is tested on the mid terms are far different. This is a contributing factor to the high failure rate. Another problem faced by several students is that there is a general difficulty in seeking solutions to problem faced while going through the course material

We propose that  the Maths department reevaluate their methods of dealing with the academic affairs of students and completely restructure the course Calculus 1 which is  currently being offered. There needs to be an environment where students can freely ask questions regarding the difficulties they encounter while learning  the course materials.There also needs to be a change to the means of assessing students. This is due to the fact that, students are fresh from high school and the level of deep analytical thinking has not yet been developed hence there should be a smoother transition into the concepts of calculus.
