Demand UTRGV extend Dr. Zhang's visa by a year due to the impact of COVID on enrollment.
Why this petition matters
“I believe language is very helpful for humans to understand each other. I already look at the Valley like my second hometown,” said Zhang. “I know where I can find good restaurants and I know how to communicate with local people. I have a feeling of love in this place.”
Dr. Zhang is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. She sparked an interest in an entire way of life that I would not have had access to if it were not for her. As the US and China begin to further develop their relationship in the coming years, it is imperative that we have as many links between the Chinese people and the people of our home as possible. Dr. Zhang represents a strong link in that chain.
As we all know, the onset of COVID impacted everything. Class registration was down across the board for both UTRGV and STC campuses, and since her class was already a fringe subject, she was especially impact. We demand that UTRGV take this into consideration and extend her contract by a year so that she may recuperate her class size and continue to forge a bond between her home and her new home that she has made here with us.
