With the Coronavirus spreading rapidly in the United States, many schools/school districts in the area (ie. Rice University, Frisco ISD, and Mckinney ISD) have begun discussion about canceling classes, or already have canceled classes due to health concerns for their students and employees.

Additionally, many UT students come from the Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio areas, all of which are currently being affected by the Coronavirus. With spring break starting soon, these students will be returning home to these areas, which will largely increase the risk of the virus spreading to UT.

In order to prevent the potential spread of the virus throughout the UT community, UT should close its campus for at least 2 weeks after spring break, which corresponds with the virus’s incubation period, in order to allow students to effectively self- quarantine and ensure that the virus will not be brought back to UT, especially since the close proximity of the students in the dorms and classrooms provides an optimal opportunity for the virus to spread rapidly throughout the UT population.

Rather than simply canceling classes due to the campus being closed, classes could be held online until the campus reopens. That way, students do not have to worry about falling behind in classes or having to learn the information in a shorter amount of time due to campus being closed.
