It is a right of passage for many college students to move out of their dorms and experience living alone for the first time during their sophomore through senior years. As such, I believe that the Department of Human Ecology should add several courses to the Nutrition department that allow students to take cooking classes to count toward the 120 hour requirement for graduation. This allows students to take classes that will benefit them academically as well as personally. It is a common phenomenon for students to struggle with learning how to cook for themselves while managing heavy course-loads, and many tend to eat out due to a lack of knowledge and/or time. Both of these can be mitigated by permitting students to learn how to cook properly for academic credit as part of their electives. If structured with global cuisines in mind, the classes may even be allotted Cultural Diversity/Global Cultures flags, thereby incentivizing students to take these courses. It provide an immense benefit to the student body by allowing students to cultivate interests personally and academically. I thus ask that you support this petition so that we can show the Department of Human Ecology this matters to us deeply. Thank you!
