Why this petition matters

Started by riya patel

The University of Tennessee's counseling center remains understaffed and underfunded, and instead of being able to provide its students with the mental health resources they were promised, they have to turn away these same students leaving them feeling helpless. The university currently only has ten therapists on staff whereas the IACS recommends that a university of our size has a minimum of 18 therapists. To combat this, we are asking the University of Tennessee to partner with the company Headspace which would provide a variety of mental health resources to the students at a budget-friendly cost to the university.

Universities such as Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Butler, and Boston University have already partnered with Headspace to provide these mental health resources. Seeing as it has been tested on other college campuses there is no reason for the University of Tennessee to not implement this resource. We do not support getting rid of any therapists and we hope that the university continues to hire new therapists to meet the increasing demand.

This is NOT a permanent solution to the counseling center's issues but we believe that this will overall alleviate pressure on the counseling center and its therapists. We hope that they will take proactive steps to improve the students experience at the counseling center overall.
