Why this petition matters

Due to the coronavirus a huge number of students have had to move out of accommodation two months before the agreed contracts were up. The university has decided to release students from their contracts but this release is still costing money. With the current events going on having the money to pay for the release is extremely hard to come by, for both students and parents who have been put out of work temporarily. As a student I feel we shouldn’t have to pay to move out, as all on-campus facilities are shut discouraging any students from being present at the university. We, as students, have received several emails strongly encouraging us to move out, so charging a fee to leave - when both the government and the university are advising this - seems very unfair. As students a reduction of this fee or no fee at all is far more ideal as some students are paying almost £500 to leave essentially. Helping people who have been put out of work, have no definite income or cannot find a job is the aim of this, as being made to move out means we are not using the facilities that the campus usually provides.
