Improve Student Services' Help for People with Mental Illnesses

This comes off the back of a The Saint article stating that one student was expelled due to their mental health issues.
A number of people within the university have approached student services asking for help with their mental health problems and found that their services are lacking in certain areas.
I personally find this appalling. However, I feel that this is a problem within the university's structure. The article in The Saint stated that it is up to individual departments to handle extensions and up to the individual to approach student services if they feel they have been treated unfairly.
This cannot continue. People suffering with mental health problems cannot be expected to do all this themselves; they are ill and need help. I propose that, to begin with, there should be more contact between student services and local GPs, a confidential record of people within the university suffering from mental health problems to corroborate between departments if someone is ill and a specific mental health officer on the SRC.
I hope you feel that this is an important issue too. Please sign to reduce stigma and help the 1 in 3 people suffering from a mental health problem in St Andrews.
