Sydney Laxson started this petition to University of San Francisco

The housing lottery for continuing students for the 2020-2021 academic school year at the University of San Francisco began on April 22, 2020 and is set to end today, May 1, 2020. Only first year students have guaranteed housing on campus and all continuing students must apply for housing if they wish to live on campus. For the incoming freshman class of 2019, 62% are female and 38% are male, which reflects the overall gender demographic of the undergraduate population at USF. This means that there is a statistically significant probability that more women would apply for housing than men. Contrary to these statistics, however, there seems to be the same number of rooms to house both continuing female and male students.

My roommate and I really wanted to live on campus next year, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to have some security in our living situation next year. When we logged on to our given room selection dates (April 29 and April 30), all of the Female spots in all of the continuing student residence halls were NOT AVAILABLE, while there were still Male spots AVAILABLE in 2 out of the 4 residence halls. For the 2020-2021 academic school year, there seems to be more women applying for housing than men.

When I emailed the Student Housing and Residential Education Association (SHaRe) about how there aren't enough rooms for females and way too many rooms for males, they didn't answer my question and only suggested me to WAIT until May 1, 2020 at 5 pm and then WAIT for my WAIT LIST number. Instead of hearing my concerns and suggestions to make USF a more gender equal community, they seemingly didn't listen and wanted to continue with what they believed what was correct.

I then received another email saying that they were not going to convert some males rooms into female rooms at the time I emailed them because there were still men who needed to sign up for housing. Not only were there numerous spelling errors in this email, including spelling my name wrong, they also made me realize that the housing lottery is random for all USF students and doesn't take into account gender at all. Lottery dates and times should be random within each gender, not within the entire population trying to get housing. Females should be assigned dates and times that are random within the females who applied for housing and the same should go for men. At no time has USF expressed to me or my friends that gender would be considered in the housing lottery.

This petition is to show USF that we will not stand for this gender housing inequality, especially from a school that is 62% female and 38% male. There should be the number of rooms for each gender that reflects this statistic and should not be 50/50 as it appears to currently be.

Please support all the women at USF by signing this petition to get USF to change the housing lottery to account for the actual demographics of the University!
