Why this petition matters

Started by Sebastian Xu

As the beginning of this semester, the shuttle service is running unreasonably for the routes heading north (red & orange line). There has been a significantly surge of students living in Innovation Square, including official campus housing for floor 10 & 11. At this time from floor 3rd to 13th are almost full and more than 90% of students are from U or R.

The enormously number of students living in Innovation Square has gone hugely over the capacity of orange line in the morning (from 8:25 am to 9:25 am). For most of the weekdays, only half of the students waiting at innovation square can get on the orange line and the buses are full. It makes the next stop: Erie Harbor impossible to get on too and the shuttle always drive away without stopping; making a certain amount of waiting students left over. Dozens of students are forced to take Uber to school for both of the stops.

It has been two weeks and there is no sign of addressing this issue. First Transit always send the smallest shuttle among all UR shuttles in the morning for orange line. What's even worse? The red line, which used to be able to stop at Innovation Square, on the route from Rush Rhees to Eastman Living Center, now are forbidden to drop students off at Innovation Square. Half of the students get on red whose destination is Innovation Square. This further squeezes the capacity of the orange line even more. As it goes a long detour around and takes 40 mins arriving at Innovation Square, red line only takes within 15 mins. Also, it would be annoying expecting winter to come and walk from Eastman Living center to Innovation Square with the snow.

The sad news recently happened at Innovation Square makes us desperately wish to reduce the frustrations living at Innovation Square and seek the possible help from the university to improve the shuttle service. Talking to any red or orange drivers driving daily, the situation is best known by them (about how many students waiting in the morning; How frequently they are asked for the red line to stop at Innovation Square and how many students each ride getting off there).

Our petition is to be able to have enough capacity to ride on the shuttle in the morning for classes. Also, the best and most time efficient route for the shuttle. Adding official stops along the red line and extending the evening hour to around 11:00pm (safety concerns) are the possible solutions we can think of. We are willing to talk about further details about the situation and negotiate.
