Mary Lind started this petition to University of Rhode Island

Because of COVID-19, URI reduced the capacity of the residence halls from 6,200 students to 4,400. They are not able to accommodate everybody who wants to live on campus, including returning students who picked our housing assignments months ago. Instead, priority is being given to incoming freshmen who submitted their housing deposits by the deadlines of June 26 or June 30, incoming transfer students who applied by those same deadlines, and returning students who can't commute because they live out of state. This message was sent out to us on June 25, a day before the deposit deadlines for new students. They said that they "anticipate that [they] will exceed our available spaces before fully assigning students in the third category" of out of state students. Classes are being held in-person and online for the fall, so not having a place to live that enables us to physically attend school is going to create a lot of issues.

This is leaving a lot of students without housing for the upcoming school year. The appeal process for on-campus housing for the fall already has around 2,000 applications for people who need to secure a spot. They are already anticipating not having enough housing for out of state returning students who can't commute. Houses in Narragansett and other areas close to the school are already mostly full (and Narragansett is trying to limit the number of students who can live there as well), and not every student can afford to live off campus in one of those houses to begin with. Many in-state students cannot commute either because they don't have access to a car, don't live close to a bus station or feel unsafe taking a RIPTA bus to school during a pandemic.

We are asking that the University change this policy and instead give housing priority to the returning students who had already secured on campus housing for the upcoming school year. It is too late for most people to get a house off campus even if we could afford it in the first place. We picked our assignments months ago and had already determined where we were going to live. As students who have already been attending this University, having our housing uprooted like this feels like a slap in the face. It is especially harmful to students (from out of state and in state) who can't afford to live in a house off campus or commute from home.

Please sign and help ensure that we have housing for the upcoming school year!
