I'm signing because as a sports coach, one should be able to set an example for all of the athletes that they mentor, and this coach did not do that by posting this insensitive comment on social media. I know that if I ever had a coach who would do something like this, then I would not be okay with it at all. This especially is true because I am an African American, meaning that the use of weaponry has been poorly used at the expense of my own community. And I also know, as an athlete, that a coach is someone you always look up to, and what they do has an impact on you, and most of my coaches have had a good impact on my life. However, as someone who has also had coaches that impacted me horribly with their indifference and demeaning attitude, I would also like to say that I know what it's like to have a bad mentor. I also know what it's like to have to face discrimination, both implicit and explicit. And this means that I know that if I had to deal with these two things together, then I would not be devastated by it. So I will sign this petition to prove that I am willing to take this issue into my own hands. I am also doing this for the betterment of all communities negatively affected by this comment the coach said to the public.

The university announcement to reinstate Mr.Michael Maynard is not only appalling, it makes no sense whatsoever. The reason given to reinstate Maynard is that a lot of people support him and that judging from people who are close to him he was not known to previously be a racist. Even if that is true (which it is not, judging from his past racist behaviours), it does not matter because it is not what he had been that got him in this trouble, it is the tweet that did – and the tweet is racist and he should be fired for it. The reasoning for reinstatement is ridiculous because it is the exact same argument as "your honor, judging from the defendant's past, the defendant has been a good citizen up until the incident with no criminal records and he has a support of the local community, so his capital murder charge should be dismissed." Yes, this example reasoning, I just gave makes as much sense as the reasoning for reinstating Maynard – it is absurdly ridiculous and would fly well anywhere (except UoR apparently). UoR, do the right thing and fire this guy already, please.

I'm signing because this is unacceptable. If the coach is willing to post something so insensitive in public, what is he doing privately? And he did it from an account that is linked to the University! This puts the school's reputation on the line.

redlands staff need to represent ALL students. they are required to make a safe environment for the student body, and this is unacceptable.

This man should be fired. Considering his comment, I am gravely concerned of how and/or what this coach taught his students. No institution should condone racist behavior and comments.
