The Board of Regents should immediately reverse the 4% increase of tuition at UP. Regardless of intent or messaging around this topic, frankly it is cruel to be raising the cost of attending the university amid a global pandemic. This has been a slap in the face to families that have experienced or may experience the loss of employment and healthcare coverage, among other things.

In reality, no matter what the University does during the next two semesters, the education and services being offered will be inferior to the one pre-COVID. While no one at UP is at fault, and this is out of the Board’s control, the Board controls the cost of tuition. Obviously, UP employs many people and a drastic drop in tuition revenue could cause employees to lose jobs or take significant pay-cuts.  However, reversing any tuition or fee increase should not cause this, but it would go a long way to helping many UP families who are struggling right now.

It was made clear in the recent Beacon article that there has been a consistent failure to listen and address the concerns of people affected by the policies of UP leadership. The toxic culture within UP administration revealed in this article has negatively impacted and will negatively impact the quality of a UP education. Many students would never have chosen to attend UP had they read this article before committing to the school. The confidence in UP administration to do the right thing is at a very low point right now. Rescinding any increase in tuition or fees would be a step in the right direction and would begin to restore some of the trust students have lost in UP leadership.
