There is an urgent need for safe spaces to bike in Oakland

Pitt’s campus and the surrounding area are deadly for cyclists.

Unfortunately we had to deal with the reality of this situation on Friday, October 23, when Susan Hicks was killed by a driver at the corner of Forbes and Bellefield. Susan was the Assistant director of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies. She was a beacon of hope and enthusiasm for her students, colleagues and peers.  Her loss has ripped through Pitt’s campus, Pittsburgh’s community of bicyclists, and though the hearts of the many people who loved her.

We are asking PennDOT, the University of Pittsburgh and the City of Pittsburgh to coordinate efforts and provide a safe space for people to bike in Oakland.

The solution is simple. The time is now. Let’s end the tragedies. Add safe space for people to bike the Fifth/Forbes corridor in Oakland.

Congratulations. Together we brought together 2,500 voices to demand a safer Fifth/Forbes Corridor.

However, this battle is far from over.
