Free the Planet started this petition to University of Pittsburgh

Free the Planet is a student organization at the University of Pittsburgh seeking to make changes on campus to raise awareness about the region's air quality and to improve the health of our Pitt community members.

Pittsburgh regularly receives failing grades in all three categories of the American Lung Associations "State of the Air" Report which measures ozone, 24-hour particle pollution, and annual particle pollution. In addition to this, the City of Pittsburgh is 4th in the country for air-pollution deaths when ranked nationally, and Allegheny County is in the top 2% of air quality pollution related cancer in the United States. The air is heavily polluted by the "Toxic Ten" industrial facilities in the area and will worsen when Shell's "Pennsylvania Petrochemicals Complex" is opened.

Because of the existing impact of the petrochemical industry on Pittsburgh's air, we urge the University to install at least one outdoor air quality monitor on campus and provide notice of Unhealthy to Hazardous air quality through the University's Emergency Notification System (ENS). The University of Pittsburgh needs to do more to monitor the air on campus because of the risk living in the area poses to the University's students, faculty, and staff.

Join us in calling on the University of Pittsburgh to address the region's air quality and protect our health.
