G Bell started this petition to University of Otago School of Medicine

Being a student is tough financially, without the added challenge of living in a city with increased rental costs and minimal properties available.

The impact of the rental market in Wellington adds an additional (on average) $50-75 to the weekly bills. This is when comparing like-for-like properties which includes heating, number of people in the dwelling. We know (from our studies) that healthy homes are homes where there isn’t crowded living and where there is adequate heating, insulation and no dampness. To ensure that these criteria are met in your property, more money often has to be forked out - that is if you can actually find a property of that quality in the first place - another challenge to overcome. The demand for properties in Wellington is huge and competitive.

The flow on effect of having to spend more on accomodation means that there is even less money to spend on necessary living costs like FOOD (less than $50 a week) and internet and power (the rental hike does not include paying for the heating). This has a significant affect on the quality of life and study potential of a Wellington School of Medicine student over a Dunedin and Christchurch placed student. They will need to work part time and/or more often to pay the essential bills. Financial stress is significant and could lead to financial suffering; impacting on study, patient care and burnout. This is the primary reason why numbers to Wellington were so low.

We are requesting the Otago Medical School:

1. Acknowledge that there is economic inequality for the Wellington Otago School of Medicine students

2. Initiate a discussion around this issue with the aim to explore some options to restore economic justice.

- can there be a subsidy for living costs?

- can there be decreased fees for those years?

- can they secure rental properties?

- can they lobby Jacinda and her team to increase the allowance in Wellington (currently it has an increase of $1 NZD - not quite enough!).

- probably other ideas when a discussion starts

Let’s start a conversation, acknowledge the economic inequality and see what changes can be made.
