The University of Otago has decided to force online exams upon the students in the second semester of 2021 without consulting any students or looking at the possibilities in the future. They have made this decision based on the small lockdown in August/September of 2021 which is too early to be making any decisions that would affect students results. The exams will not be taking place until the end of October and they run until the middle of November. To make a decision of this magnitude at this time that will impact many students results and futures overall is outrage! University of Otago have the capacity that they can hold in person exams whilst maintaining social distancing and they should take into consideration that some students do not have the required resources to partake fully in online exams. We also fear that cheating will become common. An example of this was seen during the semester one exams at the University of Auckland, where over 50% of students were caught to be cheating using online resources, and there is nothing stopping students of Otago University from doing the same. The future of our nation lies in many of the students and their career goals and aspirations are at stake.
