Concerned Student started this petition to University of Nottingham Malaysia

Due to the current circumstances brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been pushed to adopt online and remote learning. Although we appreciate the efforts being made by the university to help us transition to a virtual classroom, we cannot ignore the elephant in the room: our tuition fees.

Tuition fees for online and remote learning should be adjusted to reflect the current education methodology. Students should not be paying the same school fees for educational services that are fundamentally different. We cannot argue that the value of online learning equals that of on-campus teaching.

With the current global economic situation, we ask the university to take into consideration the financial blow that the pandemic has caused our parents, guardians and sponsors. The university should be able to make reasonable efforts to enable students to continue their studies to the best of their abilities without being overshadowed by the current financial strains that their families are experiencing.

Because this situation is envisaged to only occur for this semester, we ask the university to make the following adjustments:

a. A reduction of 50% for both domestic and international Foundation students taking the summer semester. Students who have already paid the full amount should be allowed to carry forward the remainder of their fee towards fall semester tuition,

b. The latter treatment should also apply to Undergraduate students. With a portion of their spring tuition fee being carried forward to their fall semester fees.

It is important to remember that students at UNM come from different backgrounds and countries, some of which have been hit harder by the COVID pandemic.

As part of the UNM community, we ask for the institutions' support and mindfulness of the extenuating circumstances rather than a bureaucratic response.

Recognising that this is an unprecedented situation for both parties' negotiations to find a middle ground between the students and the management should be made.
