University of Nottingham Scholars at Risk Network is campaigning for the release of Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali who is currently on death penalty in Iran.

Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali, a medical doctor and lecturer at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and a visiting professor at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium, was arrested in Iran while attending a scientific conference in April 2016 and stands accused of spying for foreign governments. He was sentenced to death in October 2017, based on evidence gathered using intense pressure, inhuman treatment and, allegedly, even torture. The Supreme Court of Iran confirmed the sentence without providing recourse to any review process or an explanation. His health has rapidly deteriorated.

Nottingham Scholars at Risk Network aims to spread awareness about his case and gather support. We have drafted a petition demanding the immediate release of Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali which will be presented to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Iran, Professor Javaid Rehman. Through this campaign, we also wish to bring to light the issue of academic freedom in Iran and the threat faced by scholars in the country.

We hope that the petition ensures the release of Dr. Djalali and also acts as a preventive method for such abuse against scholars by allowing them more freedom.
