Charles McCullum started this petition to University of Notre Dame

We are calling for the removal of the racist and ethnical inappropriate Mascot and Logo used by the University of Notre Dame. The "Fighting Irish" is a racist and harmful portrayal of the Irish people.

Any time the use of racist portrayals of any group of people, it is harmful. Notre Dame's "Fighting Irish" is an unfair and demeaning caricature of the Irish. It is a part of the narrative that Irish people are drunks and prone to violence. We have to think about how this rendering of Irish people has a subconscious effect on the public imagination. More specifically, research shows deep psychological consequences caused by the perpetuation of stereotypes — whether they are deemed “offensive” or not. The use of racist mascots is harmful because they remind those targeted of the limited ways others see them and, in this way, constrain how they can see themselves.

The removal of Notre Dame's racist rendering of the Irish lines up with the racial awakening the nation is now undergoing, with customers threatening to boycott brands accused of racial discrimination. We call on The University of Notre Dame to remove this shameful, racist depiction of the Irish people.
