The minimum wage on campus is $8.50 an hour, and students aren't allowed to work over 20 hours a week. This means that most student employees can't pay their rent, along with all of their bills, and other needs like food and survival.

Being a full time student at UNT can cost up to $30,000 a year. Even with scholarships and grants, most students still end up paying thousands of dollars out of pocket a semester to attend UNT. When students chose to work on campus, they deserve to be paid a wage that allows them to live comfortably and not go further into debt. This would help students be more satisfied with their school, and be able to focus on their studies more instead of having to work 2 jobs on top of being a full time student  just to survive. UNT has the money to be able to pay their employees a living wage, so there is no reason why we should be making less than $10 an hour, especially when we aren’t allowed to work over 20 hours a week.

Students at UNT have had to take out extra loan debt just to pay their rent, and I've even heard stories about student employees having to sell drugs or go hungry just to pay their rent. With a higher wage, this wouldn't happen as often and student employees would be able to focus more on completing their degree. This would decrease the drop out rate along with the amount of students living in poverty.
