It is not a secret that Albuquerque has one of the most notoriously violent and problematic police forces in the country. According to the Atlantic in April 2014, following the Justice Department's 16 month investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), it was determined that in 11 out of 21 fatal shootings,  "officers used deadly force against people who posed a minimal threat, including individuals who posed a threat only to themselves or who were unarmed," the report states. "Officers also used deadly force in situations where the conduct of the officers heightened the danger and contributed to the need to use force." Beyond this investigation conducted over 5 years ago, APD continues to use deadly force in situations that clearly don't require it, even as recently as March 30th, when Valente Acosta-Bustillos died unjustly at the hands of APD.

APD's impact on UNM may not be seen as great or impactful, but what is often not shared of the reality of this violence-prone force is retired officers transitions into careers at UNMPD, our campus police force, where the officers focus heavily on policing Brown and Black students. Because of UNMPD's also troubled history, we demand the publication and easy accessibility of complaints against UNMPD officers and their individual policing history, at UNMPD and other police forces.
