Parking lot accidents happen. Students face the challenge of accidents and how to approach them whether it be a minor fender-bender, or at least a small accident within the UNH parking lots. However, how do we deal with the accidents that occur when no one is watching?
Students are left with damaged vehicles, thousands of dollars in damage, and unwanted insurance claims because we have no one to take responsibility for the damage. While Article XII, Section 2 of the University's Policy states that, "The University of New Hampshire shall not be liable for any loss, theft or damage, whether accidental or intentional, including vandalism, which may occur to any motor vehicle," we need to develop a way to find someone liable other than the victim.
This is why I propose the installation of surveillance cameras in all the UNH lots. More specifically, at least one camera in each corner of each lot to be displayed on light posts, as well as more cameras as needed (e.g. depending on the size of the lot). This installation of cameras, will not only help bridge the gap between reporting damage and finding the culprit, but also protect students, faculty, and UNH assets from criminal activity.
